What is Early Intervention?

The Early Intervention Program is a public program for children birth to three years of age who are suspected of having or are at risk for having developmental delays/disabilities. Children with a diagnosis that lead to developmental delays (such as, down syndrome, autism etc.) are eligible for the program. Children with no diagnosis who have a developmental delay that is serious enough can also be eligible for the program. Early Intervention is funded by NYS and it’s county governments. Children must be referred to the county program to receive an evaluation to determine eligibility for the program. A child’s eligibility is determined by state approved evaluators that possess a contract with the NYS Early Intervention. All services authorized by the municipality are given at no cost to the family. The early intervention program arranges for service providers to deliver services according to the needs of the child and their family. Service providers and the family work as a team to make a plan to best help the child and their family.
